Introduction
1.1Meaning of Open Source Software (OSS)
Open source software (OSS)
refers to software that is developed, tested, or improved through public
collaboration and distributed with the idea that they must be shared with
other, ensuring an open future collaboration .Generally, the software source
code and other rights are provided under the open source definition or its is
located under a public domain. Hence, this authorizes the users to use, change
and improve the software and allows them to redistribute the software in it
modified or unmodified forms.
1.2Meaning of Hardware
In the field of computer science, hardware refers to the
mechanical, magnetic, electronic, and electrical components that make up a
computer system. They are corporal and tangible.
1.3Meaning of Software
In the field of software engineering, software refers the
intangible and intellectual written programs or procedures or rules and
associated documentation pertaining to the operation of a computer system and
that are stored in read or write memory.
Software is divided into two
categories:
1.System software : Consists of the operating system, the firmware,
the BIOS and various utilities software
2.Aplication software:consists of software that does real work for
the user.

The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)
2.1
Meaning of Open Source OS
Open Source Operating System is the most important program
that runs on
a computer that is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it
in modified or unmodified forms. Every general-purpose computer must have an
operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such
as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping
track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such
as disk drives and printers.

Examples of Open Source OS
Kubuntu
Linux
A user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop
Environment. With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu
project, Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone. Improved desktop,
updated applications and increased usability features are just a few of the
surprises with this latest release.
Fedora
Linux
A Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in
free and open
source software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is
built by people across the globe who work together as a community: the Fedora
Project. The Fedora Project is open and anyone is welcomed to join

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software
3.1 Meaning of Open Source
Application Software
An Open Source Application Software (commonly known as End-User
programs) is something for which the source code is available for download and
anybody can modify it and release subsequent versions of the same provided they
mention the version of the source using which they modified. It includes
spreadsheet, database programs, word processors etc.

5.0 Pervasive Computing
5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing
Pervasive computing is refers to the use of computers in
everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. It also
refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and
appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence. One of the
Holy Grails of this environment is that all these devices communicate with each
other over wireless networks without any interaction required by the users.
There are two examples of the pervasive computing are PS2 and PS3.
5.2 Examples of pervasive computing

The PlayStation
3
, officially abbreviated as PS3 is the third home video game
console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part
of the PlayStation series. The
PlayStation 3 competes with Microsof Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii as part
of the seventh generation of video game
consoles. It was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan with international markets following shortly
thereafter.Major features of the console include its unified online gaming
service, the PlayStation Network its robust multimedia
capabilities,connectivity with the PlayStation
Portable ,and its use of the Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage medium

The PlayStation
2 , officially abbreviated PS2 is a sixth-generation video game console manufactured by Sony as part of the PlayStation series . Its
development was announced in March 1999 and it was first released on March 4,
2000, in Japan. Its primary competitors were Sega 's Dreamcast, Microsft's Xbox , and Nintendo's GameCube. The
PS2 is the best-selling console of all time, having reached over 150 million
units sold as of January 31, 2011. This milestone was reached 10 years and 11
months after the system was released in Japan on March 4, 2000. Further, Sony
said it had 10,828 titles available for the system and that 1.52 billion PS2
titles had been sold since launch. In late 2009, with developers creating new
games and the console still selling steadily a decade after its original
release, Sony stated that the life cycle of the PlayStation 2 will continue
until demand ceases. The console was succeeded by the PlayStation 3 in 2006.
6.0 Conclusion
The open source model of operation and decision making allows
concurrent input of different agendas,
approaches and priorities, and differs from the more closed, centralized models
of development. The principles and practices are
commonly applied to the peer production development of
source code for software that is made available for public collaboration. The
result of this peer-based collaboration is usually released as
open-source software, however open source methods are
increasingly being applied in other fields of endeavor, such as biotechnology.
